Joy of Fly Fishing
Fly fishing is perhaps the most active of fishing types you can do. The adrenaline rush of seeing a fish come to the surface after a fly is 2nd only to sex for the male species. Like any skill practice is the best medicine. And when worlds of worries cloud your mind a day fishing will give you a new perspective. Often quoted a day fishing adds 10 days to a man’s or woman’s lifespan. Fly fishing works because you are in constant connection and control of the line. When a fish strikes your response will hook the fish immediately. I have many 18-25 trout hours and half as many bass days. I have had some 60 plus trout days on rare occasions.
The Only other form that works nearly the same is a bobber, sinker, and bait (worm). Often used with a spinning reel. Or using a spinner dragging through the water attracting the predatory strike instinct. Smaller Mepps spinners were made for fly fishermen.
The cast
The basic cast is using the weight of the line to curl forward then float falling gently to surface of the water.
Little bit of tips.
⦁ Tip of your pole should end up pointing directly where you intended to present your fly.
⦁ The above could be said to be 4/4 musical timing.
⦁ Fishing a lake cast and retrieve slowly (6 inches at a time) watch your back cast if there are lots of trees. Or using waders walk out to your waist or thighs.
⦁ Lake fishing cast out at clock locations at 9, 10,11,12,1,2, & 3 fish usually hide near submerged rocks or trees. (Hawks and Eagles).
⦁ When fishing a stream wade in and cast up and down stream trees seldom grow out far enough to be an issue.
⦁ The refraction of light and sight works in your favor is you are wading because you disappear.
⦁ Loss of flies is related to experience. My personal jingle while learning would be
3 for the trees and one for me.
Used when a back cast is problematic or fishing nymphs and streamers.
